Goal — skin & glow

An evening routine only survives if it fits in ten minutes.

Face and scalp are worked in visible red, close to the surface. It is also the goal where the gap between the usual promise and the literature is widest: the reference trials measure at sixteen weeks, not seven days.

The surface trio

Three wavelengths that are not looking for depth.

On the face and scalp, depth is not the point: the target sits a few millimetres down. That is why this goal runs in visible red, where performance runs in near-infrared. It is also why a mask, worn in contact, is a more reliable format than a panel held at an approximate distance.

For anyone wanting a short, regular evening routine, willing to judge it over months rather than over a week.

590 to 660 nm

The three wavelengths that work close to the surface

590 nm · amber red near-infrared 940 nm

590 nm

Amber — surface

Absorbed within the epidermis. Used for complexion and skin comfort, not to reach a muscle.

630 nm

Red — skin

Epidermis and superficial dermis. This is the red channel of the Antared mask, the one collagen trials document.

660 nm

Red — dermis

The most studied red wavelength in the field, present across almost the entire range.

The routine

In order, with nothing left to guess

The four session parameters — when, how long, at what distance, how often — come from our How it works page. They are not specific to this goal: it is the moment that changes.

Clean bare skin

Before skincare, with no cream and no make-up. A layer of product filters part of the light before it reaches the skin.

Ten minutes

That is the duration protocols converge on for the face. Going beyond it adds nothing documented.

Do not stare into the LEDs

The light is dazzling in visible red and invisible in the near-infrared: the blink reflex does not protect you. Close your eyes.

Write down the start date

You will judge at sixteen weeks. Without a date written somewhere, you judge from memory, and memory is generous.

The mistakes that cost the most

  • Expecting a visible result in a week. On skin and hair, the reference trials measure at sixteen weeks of regular sessions.
  • Running the session after skincare. The cream sits between the light and the skin, and the described order is the reverse.
  • Stopping then restarting. An interrupted run is not recovered by doubling the next sessions.
  • Assuming red light replaces sun protection. The two are unrelated: the spectrum used starts at 590 nm, well above ultraviolet.

Framing

What this goal does not say

A goal is not a medical indication. It names an area of the body and a moment in the week; it points to no condition and implies none. What follows is not stylistic caution: it is the exact boundary of what this page may state.

This is not dermatological care

Antared devices are wellness products, without medical-device CE marking. An undiagnosed skin lesion goes to a doctor.

There is no tanning and no UV effect

The spectrum starts at 590 nm; ultraviolet stops at 400 nm. It is neither a substitute for, nor an equivalent of, the sun.

Some situations call for medical advice first

Pregnancy, photosensitising medication, an eye condition, cancer follow-up: the question comes before the first session, not after.

No result is promised

The trials cited on our Science page were run on devices other than ours, and describe group averages.
